I attended my first Awesome Con in Washington DC this past weekend. Held at the DC Convention Center and featuring dozens of TV and film stars of the scifi/fantasy/comic book genres, there were endless booths with vendors that heavily featured artwork, comic books, and related merchandise. Among the notables were Michael Biehn (Aliens), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings) Julie Adams (Creature from the Black Lagoon), and many TV cult series stars from shows like Dr. Who. Many attendees were dressed as their favorite super hero or star.
The highlight was a couple of stars from the original Star Trek show, William Shatner (who left early) and George Takei (Mr. Sulu). Takei signed posters, posed for fan photos, and spoke before an appreciative audience about his career, acting with John Wayne, advocating equal rights, and the new Star Trek movies. He was engaging, personable, and amusing with his signature catchphrase, "Oh my!"
